Safety Rules

General Woodshop Safety Rules

To the student:

In the Woodshop you will be involved in activities where your personal safety, and the safety of others depends on common sense, cooperation, knowledge of shop safety regulations and safe practices with shop tools and equipment. If this set of rules are followed the chances of an accident occurring are vastly diminished.

Dress

  1. Safety glasses or goggles are REQUIRED BY STATE LAW and must be worn at all times in the woodshop.
  2. Loose clothing must be confined and secured for personal protection. For example, strings dangling from your sweatshirt must be tucked into your clothing.
  3. Shoes must be of the type to offer protection from falling objects and sharp items. Sandals are not proper attire in the woodworking area.
  4. Long hair can be hazardous if caught in a machine and therefore must be tied back at all times.

Conduct

  1. Students must follow the instructor’s directions in all lab activities.
  2. Students must sign and adhere to the classroom rules given to them on the first day of class.
  3. Horseplay and running in the woodshop are extremely dangerous activities and are strictly prohibited.
  4. The instructor has the right to stop any students who is operating a machine or tool when he/she is not following the safety precautions which have been set by the instructor.
  5. Do not use any tool or piece of equipment you do not feel comfortable using.

Specific Rules

  1. Students may not operate shop equipment before having safety instructions on that tool.
  2. Students may not operate any power equipment before having safety instructions and passing a safety quiz on that machine.
  3. All guards, shields and any other safety equipment provided and used in demonstrations by the instructor must be used by the student.
  4. Shop equipment must be handled with care and thought. Any misuse of shop equipment is grounds for disciplining that student.

I certify that, for my own safety and the safety of my fellow students and teacher, I have read and understand the above regulations. I will abide by the rules of the woodshop as a condition of the course I am enrolled in.
