Woodworking Course Syllabus

 

Introduction to Woodworking – Grade 6

Experiencing Technology – Grade 7

Creative Design – Grade 8

 

Course Objectives

  •  To provide an insight and overview of technology as it relates to hands on use.

     

  • To give students the opportunity to make choices and design projects using materials such as wood, plastic and metal.

     

  • To inspire and encourage students to develop safety awareness by demonstrating safe practices with all tools, machinery and equipment.

     

     

    Course Content

  • Introduction to wood; identifying hardwoods and softwoods, their different characteristics, grading, sizing and uses.

     

  • Basic instruction on safe use of hand tools such as hand saws, screwdrivers, chisels, hammers, try squares, and measuring.

     

  • Basic instruction in math; fractions, decimals, reading a ruler (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

     

  • Some individual instruction on power equipment such as the belt sander, disc sander, drill press, band saw, table saw, radial arm saw and hand drills.

     

  • Safety instruction on EVERY aspect of woodworking.

     

    Requirements

  • Each student must come to class with a pencil. (A pen is not a pencil and will not be permitted in the shop)

     

  • Each student must be at class on time and immediately find their seat.

     

  • Each student must wear eye protection at all times while in the woodshop.

     

  • Each student must wear clothing that is appropriate and does not present a safety hazard. For example, sandals are not proper attire.

     

    Grading Procedures

                Your grade will be determined from the following:

     

  • Classwork
  • Class preparation and participation
  • Tests/quizzes
  • Projects

     

    Discipline

  • Students will be disciplined for their violation of school and class rules.
  • All school rules in the student handbook apply in the woodshop.

    The discipline plan is as follows:

  • First offense = Student/Teacher conference
  • Second offense = Detention and a phone call home
  • Third offense = Referral to the office
