Preparing for 4 Year College Admission During the Summer

~ June: Ask 2 academic teachers (face to face) for a college letter of recommendation.

~ Follow up with an email thanking them for agreeing to write your letter. Include your last name.

~ Complete your resume in Naviance with everything you have done since you entered 9th grade. Include some detail about each item. Point out if you are bilingual. Pick a print format and create.

~ SATs and ACTs should have been taken, but there will be an SAT offered in August and an ACT offered in early Sept. Remember to go online in early July to register to take those tests.

~ If you are applying to Common App schools, the Common Application will be ready for your class on August 1st. Open your account and complete that application before school starts. Essay prompts are attached. Google “Common Application” and open an account, or use the link in Naviance.

~ In Naviance, move the colleges from “Colleges I’m Thinking About” to “Colleges I’m Applying To”.

~ Increase your chance of acceptance by completing all applications by 10/31

~ Your transcript can be found in the portal under ‘grades’ in the upper right hand corner.

~ The national average is to apply to 4-8 colleges. Discuss with your parents how many schools you may apply to.

~ Plan to attend the Financial Aid night with a parent in the fall so that you learn the importance of the FAFSA. It must be filled out every year you attend college.

~ Listen to announcements or check Naviance for scholarship AND college visits. Sign up to attend the college meeting if you have an interest in that school. Make it a habit to check scholarship (under the guidance website) at least once a month.

~ In September, counselors will explain the application process (pink and yellow forms) so that your counselor can complete their forms that support your application.

~ Always check the home page of Naviance for updates about where you should be in the application process.
